Games like these (same situation as Skyward Sword) are really frustrating, because I LOVE parts of them and it feels like they were soooo close to making a truly great game, but then either just don't quite make it, or shoot themselves in the foot in some way. Some aspects of the games are best in the series, but other aspects are frustrating and really drag the experience down. Both have some really high highs, but also some really low lows. Super and Origami King would be tied for third. I have the GC disc, but it really needs to not be stuck back on the game cube. Had a few small issues that make me prefer the original, but it also made some very nice improvements. TTYD would definitely be my second favourite. Really wish we had a way to play it on switch. The most well rounded, the most charming, the best pacing. Side note : I hated super paper mario art direction - the geometric people were ugly and I found some of the gimmicks and humour fell flat (pun intended).

Story has both funny, weird and touching moments and the ending is a great wrap up.Īlso the game doesn’t last too long - it’s quite perfect in length, with collectibles for people who want to 100% everything. The boss fights are interesting and clever and that’s where I clicked with the system. The rubix cube combat is a bit weird and sometimes difficult to get your head around, but you have so much money if you explore, that you can pay toads for help almost every fight (which I did in the beginning). Music, writing and art direction are phenomenal, and the humour is great. That’s why I voted for Origami king, which is a fantastic game that got critiqued systematically before even trying to look at what it does very well. This said, the fandom is making me also almost hate TTYD with its obsession and constant bashing of anything that isn’t a replica of that game. Obviously loved the first one and TTYD because it «humanised » common mario enemies and gave them personalities, and it was quite beautiful at the time. I owe it to Color Splash to finish it, but the first two are available to me right now so I'm giving them a go. I have done this with various older games over many years, and apart from being able to tick them off some gaming bucket list, I end up really wondering what was the point most times. Going into "a game" (in this case, TTYD) and waiting for the lightning bolt of oh my god this is great is never a good idea. I didn't think the Mario + Luigi RPGs were my cup of tea until I played OG Bowser's Inside Story and absolutely adored it.

SUPER PAPER MARIO PIT OF 100 TRIALS STUCK SERIES

The series as a whole has never registered for me, but I thought I should give it another try. But it's probably going to be one I get soon. It's probably the one I wanted to like the most.Ĭolor Splash - I really enjoyed this. Super Paper Mario - This wasn't that good, but I had tried a long while to like it. The actual Wii version, not the Wii U one.Īt the time of the N64, this was not at all what old (young) me wanted from a Mario game. I've had it on VC but never seriously started it. Paper Mario - played it at launch, bounced off it. I should respect this game a little more, I'll leave the internet guides alone at least to begin with. Stuck at Rogueport, looking for contact lenses. I only just booted up my recently obtained unplayed copy of TTYD. It's a cheat to say one of the Alphadream RPGs isn't it?
